We recently had a new leader go through training at work. When people asked her trainer what she was like, her trainer said she was nice, but then continued to say, as he rolled his eyes, that she was someone who “goes by the book.”

They continued their conversation about the leader, but I tuned out. Personally, I like someone who “goes by the book.” There is little to no confusion.

I have been in leadership roles over the years and the only way to keep yourself and your employees on the same page, is to go by the book.

The book, whether it is an employee manual, company code of conduct, a training manual, or the Bible, is the agreed upon way to do things in each group.

But, what about the “gray areas?” Those areas are gray because they can go either way and the deciding factor is… written in the book.

Be a person that goes by the book. -SAF-
