Good News and Bad News
The good news first.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Luke 2:30-35.
Now for the bad news.
34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. Luke 2:34,35.
I wonder how many women have had their souls pierced through by the way of motherhood.
In the song “Because He Lives” the second stanza says:
How sweet to hold a newborn baby, and feel the pride and joy he gives; But greater still the calm assurance: this child can face uncertain days because He lives! (By Bill and Gloria Gaither)
If today you are a hurting Mother due to unfulfilled dreams concerning one of your children, the Mother of our Lord faced the cruelty of a cross with her son nailed to it. She was helpless to prevent that scene. Her early pondering probably could never have imagined such a pain.
Luke 2:19: But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
While everyone seems to enjoy a Happy Mother’s Day there are some among us that grieve greatly and silently.
Some women have not a child because at one time they made the decision, or it was made for them, to have an abortion. That child is never forgotten. But every remembrance of it is accompanied by great sorrow. Sorrow over the missing baby and sorrow over the inability to find solace, comfort, and forgiveness for the action taken.
BUT, the child, the Son, that Mary grieved over at the cross of Calvary is now the resurrected Savior, and He wants to minister to the hurting mother. He forgives you, he loves you, and he offers a new life to you. Start it today and have a Happy Mother’s Day. –PJF-
