Isn’t it “funny” how everything takes priority over the church?

“We won’t be at church, Tommy has a game this Sunday.”

“Sorry pastor, I know we promised to be there, but Sally’s school called and they need another parent to chaperone for the field trip.” “Sorry I missed the church fundraiser, I had to work extra hours to catch up because we were on vacation last week.”

“Pastor, you know I can’t come during football season. I have to support my team.”

These seem to be acceptable reasons to miss church every now and then, right? We all understand that things come up, emergencies happen. We all need to take some time off and relax, nothing wrong with that.

I wonder… how many times parents have told their children’s sports teams that their child(ren) will not be at games or practices on Sundays? How many parents have told the schools, sorry you’ll have to find someone else, I have prior commitments. Why is it that church is the first thing that gets pushed aside when “more important” things come up?

It makes me wonder… When your children become adults, what will their take away be? Will a relationship with Jesus Christ be something they want to pursue? Will the church be a part of their lives at all? Or will they turn away from it all because they saw their parents give priority to their sports teams, school field trips, work, and sporting events?

Definitely something to think about. -SAF-
