The new year has already begun. It is the time of year where the phrase "out with the old, in with new" is attached to everything in life. Now more space is needed for the new presents that were recently received. What should be done with the old things: keep them, throw them away, or donate them?
Here are some guidelines to consider if you are thinking about donating items to a local not-for-profit organization or ministry:
1. If your item is broken and you are not interested in repairing it before you donate it, either throw it away or give it to someone that you know who can use it and is willing to put money and time into repairing it. Most nonprofit organizations do not have the resources to fix items and they will end up throwing it away.
2. If it is dirty and so marked up that the design on the item is unrecognizable to those outside of your family, it should be thrown away.
3. If it has missing parts, please do not donate.
I am not trying to discourage giving or donating. The old cliché “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure,” should not be your thought when considering whether or not to donate an item. It would be in the best interest of all- you, the organization, and those who receive services from the organization-, if the donations received were good quality items. -SAF-
