Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God, and in the presence of these witnesses, to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony; which is an honorable estate, instituted of God, and signifying unto us the mystical union which exists between Christ and his Church; which holy estate Christ adorned and beautified with his presence in Cana of Galilee.
Marriage is to be entered into with the Divine looking in, and the human looking on. It is intended to be between a man and a woman. The union is to be holy; that is set apart from all other relationships and all other covenants.
Marriage is not just a piece of paper but it is a covenant a man and a woman agree to. God is the originator of marriage. Marriage is so elevated in its human intricacies, that it represents the divine relationship between Christ and the Church.
God officiated the very first marriage in the Garden of Eden. Jesus honored marriage by performing his very first miracle at a wedding in Cana of Galilee.
This week while many celebrate “love” while giving little attention to marriage, we celebrate marriage, a commitment to love. “Will you be my valentine?” can never replace, “Do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?” and, “Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
