Luke 19:37-40: And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
On His Way to the Cross Jesus stopped over in Jerusalem. As he approached the city, He decided it was time to fulfill one more prophecy concerning Himself.
Five hundred years previous, the Prophet Zechariah had seen and heard this day.
Zechariah 9:9: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
The Gospel writers confirmed the fulfillment of that prophetic utterance.
Matthew 21:4,5: All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
John 12:14,15: And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an
ass's colt.
Jesus will never let the prophetic voice be in vain. The true prophets speak and God sees to it that their word is fulfilled even after many seasons.
Now, not only is the part that speaks of Jesus fulfilled. We have heard a lot about that. More so, Jesus gives his followers an opportunity to be part of that fulfilled word.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem:
They rejoiced and they shouted!
The whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice. Verse 37.
The prophecy was fulfilled in its entirety. Jesus fulfilled the Triumphal
Entry part, and the people fulfilled the loud voice part. The religious folk were not happy because it was all fulfilled in Jesus. They would not approve of anything that pertained to Him even if it were good.
Jesus responded: If these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. Verse 40.
Unlike the religious folks, the stones would have enough sense to fulfill prophecy. They would want to be a part of that and not just sit there lifeless. They will be glad to shout out a praise to the King who comes in the name of the Lord, their creator!
Psalms is also replete with prophetic words regarding the shouts of the saints.
Jesus is in town. Do not look for a prophetic word. Fulfill a prophetic word. Shout! -PJF-
