Praying in the Spirit Part 2

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. Jude v20.

There is only one class of people to which this scripture applies. This scripture gives the secret of self-edification to those that are Spirit filled according to Acts 2:4. Praying in the Holy Ghost is utilizing the tongues of the Spirit, or as some prefer, the prayer language he has given, as a means of building yourself up.

1 Corinthians 14:2,4a expands the matter considerably.

2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

The Apostle Paul enlightens us as to what transpires when a Spirit filled believer speaks in tongues. First, he is in direct communication with God. That is he has an exclusive audience with God. Though no man can understand, God certainly understands. And He listens.

In addition, the Spirit filled believer praying in tongues is declaring mysteries; things beyond her own ability, knowledge, and understanding. That person is suddenly eloquent in language, reaching into unresolved matters, and coming into perfect solutions which God is wanting to bring about.

Romans 8:28 unveils it. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Praying in the Spirit, then, negates the need to conclude a prayer with, If it be thy will.

And Paul agrees with Jude in verse 4a.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself

Praying in tongues is a spirit builder.

Furthermore, James 3:8 says: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Suddenly the tongue is tamed and is expressing a perfect prayer.

James 3:2 adds: If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. There is season, though momentarily, that the one praying in tongues has touched perfection. That will mess up your religious thinking!

This is the “why” of glossolaleo, the Greek for speaking in tongues. In the Great Commission Jesus included this in the authority believers would have. Matthew 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.

Finally. Paul shares with us the secret of his success in

1 Corinthians14:15,18:

What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all.

And the Apostle gives the final word in verse 39b: And forbid not to speak with tongues. --PJF--
