8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. Colossians 3:8-14
We faith folk like to talk about “Now faith” from Hebrews 11:1. The prophetics like to talk about a “Now word.” And the healers among us like to command “Right now!”
Let us see how well we can deal with the “But now” in verse 8.
And he is not talking to the street people. He is addressing the saints, in the church. As an apostle Paul was required to be a perfecter of these. This is the He will complete what He has begun in us part of the Christian development we wrote about last week. We are to actively participate. And he did not speak of a deliverance service. You do not need deliverance, you need to make a decision. You do not cough up this stuff. You have a change of garment. You do not have to pray and fast. The Holy Spirit facilitates the process but the change is up to you!
That will sure mess up your religious thinking.
So let us get started.
Put off: Gr. Apotithēmi- Strong’s G659: To put away (literally or figuratively:—cast off, lay apart (aside, down), put away (off). to put off from oneself: renounce.
I mentioned a change of garment because it is as though we have worn this all our life before Christ and now it is time to take it off, put it off from oneself, renounce. Time to clean out the closet. Time for a new spiritual wardrobe.
Put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another. We see a lot of verbal expressions and abuse. It is to be put off.
So put off the old man because you already have the new man.
Verse 10: And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.
Now with the new man we also have to put on mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forgiveness, and love.
Put off six and put on seven. Quite an assignment.
Let us look at the Greek here too.
Put on: Gr. Endyō- Strong’s G1746: to sink into (clothing), put on, clothe one's self, (in the sense of sinking into a garment); to invest with clothing (literally or figuratively):—array, clothe (with), endue, have (put) on.
It is the same word of Luke 24:49 where Jesus says:
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
At salvation you put on the new man. But now, it is high time to renew him with knowledge after the image of him that created him.
Renewal comes through knowledge. Here we have given you some. Now, be filled with the Spirit, take the initiative, and get into the Word until you are after the image of him that that created you. Improve your putting. -PJF-
