There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. Luke 1:5.
Much was beginning to take place right under the nose of the great King Herod. Within fifteen months two baby boys would be born that would change the course of history. One, called John, would be a prophet to the nation of Israel. The other, called Jesus, would be a Savior to the whole world. And Herod knew nothing about it.
Those in political power are not privy to what the All-powerful would accomplish on the earth. Initially God’s plan was inconspicuous. In two small towns of Israel two impossible conceptions were taking place. Elizabeth, the wife of Zacharias and mother of John, was well past her child bearing years. Mary, the young betrothed of Joseph and mother of Jesus, was a virgin.
God delights in the impossible. The angel that appeared to Mary wraps it up with these words in verse 37:
For with God nothing shall be impossible.
What we are celebrating this Holy Season began with the impossible becoming possible.
Perhaps what we are hoping and believing for appears impossible. But God.
Those of low estate, as Mary later called herself in verse 48, will soon be echoing her words in verse 49:
For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. -PJF-
