Two Completely Different Teachings

February 2022

By Pastor Shirley Flores

Our missionary friends in Morocco are fasting and praying for the Muslim people for 21 days. On their Meta page they post information about the Muslim culture and the prayer focus for the day. One day they posted the “reason” Muslim men are rough with their women and are willing to put to death anyone who does not fall in line with the teachings of the Quran.

Hisbah is an Arabic word that relates to accountability and reckoning. In hisbah, a person interferes in another individual’s personal life and forces him or her to adopt certain beliefs and behavior under penalty of death. Muhammad said: “Whoever sees an evil must change it with his hand [by using force]. If he cannot do so, then with his tongue [through teaching]. If he still cannot do so, then with his heart [through love and compassion], which is the weakest form of faith” (Hadith).

Hadith is a collection of traditions containing sayings of the prophet Muhammad which, with accounts of his daily practice (the Sunna), constitute the major source of guidance for Muslims apart from the Quran.

It makes me sad that people believe this and practice it. As I read the words of Muhammad, their prophet and teacher, it brought to light the differences between Muhammad and Jesus.

This is how Jesus tells us we should treat such people: Matthew 18:15-17: Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

What a huge difference between the two!

Muhammad’s teaching promotes fear and division through attitudes of superiority.

Jesus’ teaching promotes healing and restoration through relationships.

We should always endeavor to show people the truth. John 14:6 says that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one can get to the Father accept through Jesus.

Jesus teaches us the right way to address problems with other believers that does not threaten or belittle anyone. And in the end, if the individual still chooses not to heed counsel and change, then we part ways. No one loses their life over it.

We join with our missionary friends in Morocco and pray that Muslims everywhere accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. -SAF-
