6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.

8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.

Psalm 55.

David was not having a good day.

In the previous five verses to these he was in prayer telling God about

the overwhelming challenges he was facing. Suddenly he interjects his

own words into the prayer letting God know what he had been

thinking about the whole matter. And I said…

Interesting to hear what David the Psalmist thought would be a

solution to the problem. Wings. No not of the food kind. He was not

hungry. He wanted wings like a dove. The flying kind of wings. For

then would I fly away.

Have you ever had the desire to get away from it all? Probably most of us during the past year have grown weary of the circumstances in our country. A lot has changed in recent days but there is still so much confusion and conflict in our society. Surely wings would help.

Perhaps it is a domestic situation you are wrestling with. The ongoing

tension is weakening your resolve to stick to it. Change seems

unattainable. Peace is far removed. Wings would help about this time.

Physically some have reached a point of desperation. The medicines,

the doctors, the fear, the pain. Wings, take me away.

Some are drained emotionally. Tears, grief, and heaviness surround

them. The hurt inflicted has gone down deep into the soul. Wings,

raise me above it all.

Spiritually some are empty. Distance from God and the church has

drained so many dry. Wings to fly would help to ascend once again.

After telling God some more about the difficulties in his life, David

tells us about a decision he has made.

16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me.

17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

And it worked!

18 He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.

Aha! There is hope in God.

And before he closes David gives us a word of advice.

22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

You don’t really need wings after all. -PJF-
